Excavation Safety Competent Person Training

Competent Person Training is designed for all employees involved in trenching work, including job foremen, job superintendents, engineers, and any personnel involved in underground projects. According to OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart J, every excavation must have a designated Competent Person to manage the safety aspects of the site. To properly carry out Competent Person responsibilities, this individual must have training in and be knowledgeable of soil analysis, the use of protective systems, and the requirements of the standard.

Additional responsibilities include identifying existing and predictable hazards in the work environment and possessing the authority to take prompt corrective action.

Training topics:

  • Introduction to trench safety
  • The OSHA Subpart P Excavation Standard
  • Competent person responsibilities
  • Sloping, shoring, shielding guidelines
  • Protective systems options
  • Job planning
  • Soil analysis doing visual and manual testing for the following soils-Stable Rock, Type A, B, C-60, C-80 Soils
  • Review the different types of engineering manufacturers. Tabulated Data, Site Specific, and OSHA Appendices.
  • How to install aluminum vertical hydraulic

This workshop includes four hours of classroom instruction, student manual, and a certificate of completion, in addition to special extended afternoon field exercises that include evaluating open trenches using various protection systems, PLUS a mock inspection of a trench by Wyoming OSHA. Instructor Kris Graham and OSHA consultants will be on hand to answer questions. This extended training and practical experience in the afternoon is brought to you by the Town of Afton, Lincoln County, and United Rentals.

Fall Protection Awareness

MSA offers an introduction to Safety at Heights through its four-hour Fall Protection Awareness course. This course is designed for employees who are regularly required to work at height and who are supervised by the company’s Competent Person(s) under its fall protection program.

At the successful completion of this course, the participants will be able to discuss and demonstrate the following topics:

  • Hazard recognition, evaluation, and control
  • ABCs of fall protection
  • Proper selection, pre-use inspection, and care of fall protection equipment
  • Proper donning and doffing of a harness
  • Selection, application, and use of Fall Protection Systems – Restraint, Positioning, & Fall Arrest as they relate to the “ABCs” of fall protection
  • Fall clearance calculations

Course includes:

  • Hands-on instruction by an MSA factory-trained instructor
  • The MSA Fall Protection Awareness instruction training manual and supporting documents
  • MSA Fall Protection Awareness Certificate

Competent Person for Equipment Inspection

The Competent Person for Equipment Inspection course is designed for the fall protection equipment user, or at-risk worker, as well as their supervisors and the safety professional. It is also designed for those in the tool room who may issue fall protection gear to others and who are required to perform regular inspections on it.

At the completion of this course, the participants will be able to discuss and demonstrate the following topics:

  • Consensus standards as they relate to inspection
  • Formal documentation requirements
  • Formal inspection processes, including the criteria for pass/fail and disposal for all MSA fall protection equipment, with a special emphasis on:
    • Full Body Harnesses
    • Energy-Absorbing Lanyards
    • Self-Retracting Lanyards / Personal Fall Limiters
  • Equipment cleaning and storage
  • The last quarter of the class is dedicated to providing hands-on inspection experience with field-used fall gear, giving students the opportunity to touch, feel, look for, and discuss the types of damage discussed in the class.

Course Includes:

  • Hands-on instruction by an MSA factory-trained instructor
  • The MSA Competent Person for Equipment Inspection instruction training manual and supporting documents
  • MSA Fall Protection Competent Person for Inspection Certificate

Construction Focus Four: Electrocution Hazards

The Construction Focus Four was developed in support of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Construction Outreach Program’s effort to help workers in the construction industry understand the hazards they face and know what their employer’s responsibilities are regarding protecting workers from workplace hazards. The series is designed to address the most serious injuries and fatalities found on construction sites around the US. 

This course will help workers identify major electrocution hazards, describe different types of electrocution hazards, and how to protect themselves and others from electrocution hazards.

  • What is an electrocution hazard?
  • What are the major types of electrocution hazards in construction?
  • How can I protect myself from electrocution hazards?
  • What is my employer required to do to protect workers from electrocution?
