Initial Unemployment Insurance (UI) claims and the total number of continued weeks claimed both decreased from prior-year levels in March 2024. Initial and continued claims also followed their normal seasonal patterns and decreased from February to March.

There were 1,433 initial claims in March 2024, down 36 claims (-2.5%) compared to March 2023. Aside from a couple months in 2023, initial claims have largely decreased from prior-year levels during each month since March 2021. Initial claims normally peak in January and then trend downward through the summer, with a slight bump in April each year.

The total number of continued weeks claimed decreased from 11,977 in March 2023 to 11,649 in March 2024 (-328, or -2.7%). Continued claims also were down 11.8% (1,559 fewer claims) over the month.

The total number of unique claimants increased from 3,474 to 3,948 over the year (474, or 13.6%), but decreased by 7.6% over the month.
