Labor Standards

If your business hires youth ages 14–17, it’s important to follow child labor laws designed to protect young workers and support their education. Most Wyoming employers are covered by federal child labor laws, which regulate:

  • Hours youth may work
  • Types of jobs youth may perform
  • Minimum wage and overtime requirements
  • Safety protections and prohibited occupations
  • Penalties for violations

Some Wyoming businesses may be exempt from federal requirements and instead follow state child labor laws if they:

  • Do not ship goods across state lines
  • Have two or fewer employees
  • Generate less than $500,000 annually
  • Operate on a cash-only basis

Minors may also work for their parents in many occupations, including agricultural work, with some restrictions for hazardous jobs.

Student Learner and Student Training Agreements

Wyoming employers with Workers’ Compensation coverage may participate in the Student Learner and Student Training Agreement program. These agreements allow students to gain hands-on work experience while earning school credit or compensation.

Through the program, eligible employers may partner with a school, student, and the Division to place students in approved training opportunities, including some extra-hazardous occupations.

Students participating under an approved agreement are covered under the employer’s Workers’ Compensation policy during the training period.

Employer Responsibilities

Employers are responsible for:

  • Filing the agreement with the Division
  • Maintaining Workers’ Compensation coverage
  • Notifying the Division of any changes or termination of the agreement
  • Following all applicable child labor requirements
