CHEYENNE, WY— The Department of Workforce Services (DWS) is pleased to announce Clayco as an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star Level Designation recipient as a Mobile Workforce (MWF) within Wyoming. As a Mobile Workforce, Clayco is not tied to a specific site address but is instead committed to a VPP Star level of Safety Excellence for every project they work on in Wyoming.

The VPP Cowboy Star is Wyoming OSHA’s highest level of recognition of employers and workers who have employed effective safety and health management systems and kept injury and illness rates below the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ industry averages. VPP programs bring company management, site employees, and OSHA together to work proactively to focus on hazard prevention and control, worksite analysis, training, management commitment, and worker involvement to prevent fatalities, injuries, and illnesses.

Prospective VPP participants apply to OSHA for consideration and then undergo a rigorous onsite evaluation by a team of safety and health professionals. Learn more about VPP here.

Established in 1984, Clayco is an integrated design-build firm that works with clients across North America. Their commitment to seeking out new technologies, methods, and ways to execute high-quality, mission-critical projects mirrors their commitment to safety excellence.

Clayco exemplified excellence in several areas identified by Wyoming OSHA, including their adherence to specific color schemes and signage standards, ensuring a consistent visual identity across all sites. From speed limit indicators to trailer designations, this uniformity facilitates seamless acclimation to the company’s safety protocols for workers transitioning between projects. Clayco’s hallmark commitment to safety sets its sites apart, offering employees the assurance of returning home safely at the end of each shift. The emphasis on cleanliness extends beyond aesthetics, serving to enhance workplace safety and reduce the risk of manual handling injuries. Furthermore, in adverse weather conditions, workers receive timely notifications via text, underscoring the company’s prioritization of their safety above all else.

Under its Ladders Last policy, Clayco restricts ladder usage to rare and specific scenarios, imposing stringent safety protocols such as the requirement for written permits and approvals. Instead, the company relies extensively on various lift systems tailored to different needs, ensuring a comprehensive selection is readily available onsite. Safety remains paramount, with workers mandated to secure themselves when using lifts, including routine tasks like operating scissor lifts.

Clayco’s Construction Power Program goes beyond electricity to safeguard the team from potential shock hazards and ensure deliberate, safe interactions with energized components. This initiative redefines “temporary power” as “Construction Power,” implementing detailed protocols such as eliminating ground-level cords and regular equipment inspections. These measures not only mitigate electrical risks but also elevate overall cleanliness standards and streamline mechanical material handling processes.

Above all, safety is non-negotiable for Clayco. The company seeks partners who share its unwavering dedication to safety, recognizing it as a collective responsibility on the site. This commitment is reinforced through comprehensive safety provisions in contracts, supported by an effective disciplinary framework and specialized training. Importantly, safety concerns are not limited to supervisors; every team member has the authority to halt work if a safety issue arises. As a general contractor, contractor management is integral to Clayco’s operations, and the company takes pride in upholding the highest safety standards.

“Becoming a VPP Star site is the highest accolade an employer can earn from OSHA, and it is an amazing achievement. Clayco’s unwavering focus on the safety and health of its employees and the other contractors on their work sites exemplifies the attributes and commitment of VPP,” says Wyoming OSHA Deputy Administrator Karen Bebensee.
