Child Labor Laws: Keeping Your Teen Safe at Work

When teens start working, child labor laws help make sure the job is safe, age-appropriate, and doesn’t interfere with school. These laws are designed to protect young workers while giving them the opportunity to build skills and gain valuable work experience.

What Parents and Employers Should Know

Child labor laws cover:

  • Work hours for youth ages 14–17
There are limits on how many hours teens can work on school days and non-school days.
  • Safe and appropriate jobs
Some jobs are prohibited for minors, especially work involving hazardous equipment, heavy construction, or dangerous materials.
  • Farm and family work
Youth may work on farms or in family businesses, but restrictions apply for younger children and certain hazardous duties.
  • Pay and workplace protections
Minors must receive at least minimum wage and may qualify for overtime pay protections.

Understanding these requirements helps parents, schools, and employers support safe and positive work experiences for Wyoming youth.

Student Learner & Student Training Agreements

Wyoming’s Student Learner and Student Training Agreement program gives students the opportunity to gain real-world work experience while earning school credit or compensation.

Through this program, employers in extra-hazardous industries that carry Workers’ Compensation coverage may partner with a school, student, and the Division to provide supervised training opportunities.

How the Program Works

  • Students receive hands-on workplace experience in approved training environments.
  • Students are covered under the employer’s Workers’ Compensation policy during the agreement period.
  • Training may count toward school credit or paid work experience.
  • Employers are responsible for submitting the agreement to the Division before training begins.
  • Employers must also notify the Division of any changes or termination of the agreement.

Before participating, employers should review Wyoming child labor requirements and Workers’ Compensation guidance related to student learners and trainees.
